The Eagle Flew Over Kyiv

(Letiv Orel Kyjevom)

A traditional springtime Ukrainian folk song.

Letiv Orel Kyjevom (“The Eagle Flew Over Kyiv”) is a traditional Ukrainian spring khorovod or walking song from the Kharkiv region, Iziium district. The song captures the feeling of winter giving way to spring as the eagle flies over Kyiv bringing news of the changing season. The text reflects themes of renewal, nature, village life, and youthful energy, making it a beautiful window into Ukrainian musical tradition.

In Ukrainian symbolism, the eagle represents a strong young man, and songs like this were often connected to springtime gatherings, movement, and social dancing. The lyrics speak of snow melting, fields being prepared, and the work of spring beginning, giving the song both a poetic and communal character. Young women would traditionally sing it while walking in a crisscross pattern outside the village, adding to its sense of motion and seasonal celebration.

I first came across this song when it was presented by Natalie Nowytski for the Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy I attended at the University of St. Thomas back in 2023. I was captivated by the hauntingly beautiful melody, and was emotionally drawn to the song as the Russian invasion of Ukraine was in full swing.

I arranged a version of the song suitable for Orff instruments in most classrooms. The song features a recording I found on the website PolyphonyProject.com, a website devoted to cataloguing, recording and preserving traditional Ukrainian folk tunes.
